I was away from school today to make a presentation to the James Rutter Middle School.

Intermediate Computers finished up their post-production work on the “Transpose” video and began to edit the “ConsessionStand” raw video.

Marketing wrote a first draft of a 30-second radio ad for their favorite charity or cause.  They need to include everything that will be heard on the radio including words, sound effects, and/or music.

Computer Technology worked on MicroType lesson 20.  They then copied the “File Management 5″ folder from the Assignments folder to their own home folder.  They received a paper copy of 22 tasks to perform on their copy of File Management 5 including copying files, deleting files, renaming files, etc.

Virtual Enterprise completed the “Misused Words” handout that had them discovering the proper use of commonly misused words such as “principal” and “principle” and “personal” and “personnel”.

School is closed today in honor of Lincoln’s birthday.

Intermediate Computers continued to complete their post-production work on the “Transpose” video.

Marketing presented their direct marketing door hangers to the class.  They then learned about the Albertson vs. Grocery Outlet trademark infringement lawsuit about the use the the Lucky brand.  Finally, they learned about the Ralph Lauren vs. US Polo Association-Jordache trademark infringement lawsuit.

Computer Technology worked on MicroType lesson 19 (caps lock and “?”).  They then took a series of 3-minute timed writings and updated the classroom progress chart.

Virtual Enterprise took a pre-employment test that included questions about spelling, math, and grammar.  They then learned about commonly misused words such as capitol and capital, compliment and complement; lay and lie; etc.

Intermediate Computers reviewed how to save a PowerPoint presentation as a series of pictures.  They imported those pictures into their Windows Movie Maker “Transpose” video they began yesterday.  They learned to add titles to their video, transitions between cuts and effects to sections of video.

Marketing finished up their direct marketing door hanger project.  They will present in front of the class tomorrow.

Computer Technology worked in MicroType lesson 18 (”z” and colon).  They finished up the File Management 2 and File Management 3 exercises that had them using Windows Explorer skills mentioned in the February 2, 2010 blog entry.  Finally, they were given the File Management 4 folder and had to use their skills to organize the 68 files in it.

Virtual Enterprise completed income tax forms based on W-2 and 1099 forms given to them.  They had to complete two tax returns in a row without errors.

Intermediate Computers completed editing their first movie (the “Good Morning” video) using Movie Maker.  They then began to edit a second video (Excel’s Transpose, Text to Columns, and Join Cells).  They learned about adding transitions between cuts and about adding visual effects.

Marketing is working on their direct marketing door hanger project.

Computer Technology worked on MicroType lesson 17 (a review lesson).  They then finished up their File Management 2 exercise from yesterday and began File Management 3.

Virtual Enterprise finished up a 1040EZ from yesterday and completed a second one today.

Intermediate Computers learned to edit film using Windows Movie Maker.

Marketing is working on their door hanger project, due Thursday at the end of the period.

Computer Technology worked on MicroType lesson 16.  They learned to use Windows Explorer to perform these file management skills:  delete a file, rename a file, copy a file to another folder, move a folder to another folder (cut and paste), find the size of a file, change the Read Only attribute of a file, sort a list of files in alphabetical order or in size order, create a new text file.

Virtual Enterprise reviewed personal exemptions, deductions, adjustments, and credits.  They began to prepare a tax return based on given information.

Intermediate Computers finished up their original newsletter project.

Marketing learned about direct marketing.  They began an individual project:  they are to create a door hanger for a business that homeowners would be interested in.  This project is due on Thursday at the end of the period.

Computer Technology worked on MicroType lesson 15.  They learned about paper orientation, font pitch, font size, and three general types of fonts (serif, sans serif, and script).

Virtual Enterprise learned about the Federal income tax process and how to fill out a 1040EZ tax return.

Intermediate Computers is working on their original newsletter project.

Marketing used the day to interact with their mentors and the mentor website www.icouldbe.org

Computer Technology worked on MicroType lesson 14 (”m” and “x”).  They took the proofreader marks quiz.  They completed a 25-sentence worksheet about the use of “they’re”, “their”, and “there”.

Virtual Enterprise heard the Marketing Plan presentation from the marketing plan team.  They then were introduced to a new portable cart prototype created by a special visitor to our classroom, the father of one of our students.  We will use this ingenious cart to help transport our trade booth and luggage on our travels.  Thank you, Mr. I!  Finally, students gave 1-minute impromtu speeches to the class to help improve their speaking style and technique.

Intermediate Computers finished up their three practice newsletters:  Chocolate, Species, and Egret.  They began work on their original newsletter about a career they are interested in or about a subject they are learning in another class.

Marketing looked at ways to improve the presentation they made last Friday (the ON THE RIVER group project).  They then worked on their mentor units at www.icouldbe.org

Computer Technology worked on MicroType lesson 13 (a review lesson).  They received back Proofreading Exercise 3 from yesterday.  They watched a PowerPoint of embarrassing ads that were not proofread very well (see below).  They completed Proofreading Exercise VI (you can see a copy here) and went over the corrections in class.

Intermediate Computers finished up the “Species” newsletter and then completed the “Egret” newsletter containing a watermark.  They began an original newsletter about a subject in another class or about a career they are interested in.

Marketing finished the 1040EZ tax return they began yesterday and then completed a second 1040EZ tax return.

Computer Technology had their makeup test this morning at 8:15 for those who were absent on Friday.  They worked on MicroType lesson 12 (”b” and “y”).  They received back the Proofreader’s Exercise 2 from yesterday.  They completed a series of 1-minute timed writings to gauge their speed and accuracy.  They completed Proofreader’s Exercise 3.
